  • New Campuswide wayfinding for a beloved New York museum.

Since its founding in 1869, the AMNH has been a staple of New York City’s history and culture. Over those 150+ years, the Museum has expanded its walls and footprint by adding over 2 million square feet of exhibitions, and several scientific collections—leaving ample opportunities to get lost!

In anticipation of its new addition, The Gilder Center designed by Studio Gang, opening in 2023, the AMNH hired Pentagram to design a comprehensive wayfinding system that both embodies the Museum’s spirit and provides clear communication for its visitors.

The design team collaborated with Chester Jenkins at Village to create a custom serif and sans serif typeface family to be used throughout the new wayfinding system, Gilder Center donor signage, and the Museum’s marketing communication. Along with a custom typeface family, a suite of graphic icons to identify the Museum’s various exhibits and amenities will be an integral part of the wayfinding system and museum map.

  • Product design for a notNeutral collaboration with the Cooper Hewitt Shop.

The Crevel pattern was created by René Crevel in 1920 as a wallcovering in a soft gray-and-pink colorway. The notNeutral team created a modern interpretation of the pattern by increasing the contrast and adding vibrant pops of color.
